A meta-analysis (used for drawing objective conclusions from large bodies of research) found that the Transcendental Meditation technique produced a significant decrease in basal skin conductance compared to eye-closed rest, indicating profound relaxation. Deep rest and relaxation were also indicated by greater decreases in respiration rates and plasma lactate levels compared to ordinary rest. These physiological changes occur spontaneously as the mind effortlessly settles to the state of restful alertness, Transcendental Consciousness.

This study found that during the Transcendental Meditation Programme some of the early sensory components of the brain's response to somatosensory stimulation (0–100 msec) are more widely distributed across the cortex. This study, by Dr. Nicolai Nicolaevich Lyubimov, Director of the Moscow Brain Research Institute's Laboratory of Neurocybernetics, indicates that during the Transcendental Meditation Programme there is an increase in the areas of the cortex taking part in perception of specific information and an increase in the functional relationship between the two hemispheres.

Conclusion

During the practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique, the body gains a unique state of deep relaxation that dissolves accumulated stress and fatigue. At the same time, brain functioning becomes more orderly. As a result, the body becomes healthier and more integrated, leading to greater success in dynamic activity.
